CANDLESTICK MAKER is my first spider introduction. It is certainly narrow enough that there should be no controversy whatsoever in the unlikely event it ever wins the Harris Olson award. Over the years I have heard people say they wanted a small spider for the front of the border. And maybe because CANDLESTICK MAKER was planted among giants, it gives the impression in the garden of being both shorter and having smaller blooms than what I measured. CANDLESTICK MAKER has a long bloom season, having been seen by garden visitors this past summer prior to the Cincinnati National in late June. It was still blooming at the beginning of August. For reasons I can't fully explain and which I intend to remedy, it has been pretty much ignored in my breeding program. Probably not pod fertile in full sun and I have never tested its pollen. Notwithstanding, my past failures to explore the full potential, I think CANDLESTICK MAKER has a good potential to produce spider offspring, given that it's a spider resulting from two parents known to produce a higher percentage of spiders than most.
